In 2021, Karinding was officially recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia in the category of Performing Arts. Since then, a consortium of Indonesian and international experts has, for example, been researching the use of Karinding in the underground and metal music scene in Bandung, Java. However, the consortium’s overarching aim is to look at how Karinding can be passed on to the younger generation and how the musical instrument can be integrated into the national education system. In addition, our Indonesian colleagues are working purposefully towards proposing Karinding for inclusion in the UNESCO International List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Since February this year, our UNESCO Chair in Digital Culture and Arts in Education, whose research has focused for many years on the research of cultural transformation dynamics and the development of a theoretically and empirically sound concept of „cultural resilience“, has been supporting this exciting process in an advisory function.
In September 2024, all interested parties will now have the unique opportunity to experience the innovative and transformative practice of making music with the Karinding and our Indonesian colleagues live in Europe and, in addition to the planned concerts and film screenings, to take part in a research workshop on the topic of „Cultural Resilience“...
